I've always hated the thought of old, established trees being chopped down, so it was hard for me to be convinced that it was time for 3 of our 11 large fir trees to go.
However, they had been growing for years without ever having been cut back and were tangled up in one of the walnut trees as well as overhanging the pool. The hedge which was planted to screen the pool and plant room wasn't thriving underneath them either.
Fir trees have to be trimmed just below the ends of the branches so drastic pruning wasn't an option and so tree felling was added to the list of skills yet to be learned.
Equipped with tractor, rope & chain saw and a helping hand from our knowledgeable farmer friend, the trees came down more or less effortlessly. The branches were trimmed & cleared and now I'm hoping to make some children's stools from the trunks.
The Grapevine is the place where you'll find all the snippets of information, useful or otherwise that don't really have a place in the main site. Not a blog or newsletter, more an informal account of our French country life & what goes on behind the scenes at Les Crouquets in the Perigord Noir!
