The Grapevine is the place where you'll find all the snippets of information, useful or otherwise that don't really have a place in the main site. Not a blog or newsletter, more an informal account of our French country life & what goes on behind the scenes at Les Crouquets in the Perigord Noir!

DOMAINE des CROUQUETS
The Perigord region is famous for its walnuts and it's that time of the year again when the harvest is in full swing.
We only have 15 walnut trees so not for us the new fangled mechanical ways...no. We stick with traditional methods here. Baskets and sore backs all round!
The nuts are dried in huge wire beds in our barn until January - they can be eaten before being dried but they'll be a bit bitter.
The long dark nights are then spent cracking the interminable pile of nuts!
This year we made our first batch of walnut wine using unripe green nuts picked back in July ~ it's not bad for a first attempt! We got the recipe from Madame Faure, one of Jayac's oldest residents. She was born at Les Crouquets and is an endless source of information. No doubt more of her stories will unfold in snippets to come!
Amar loves growing things! This year the fruit & vegetable patch spilled over into the trees bordering the pitch & putt. Potatoes, onions, peas, artichokes, peppers, tomatoes, courgettes, aubergines,
broccoli, lettuce, cabbage, melons, strawberries - you name it, it was there!
Such was the extent of Amar's enthusiastic planting that one of our guests asked us if we supplied the Terrasson Thursday market!
The piece de resistance this year though had to be the pumpkins.
